Homemade Mint Lemonade Recipe: The Perfect Summer Drink

When the hot summer days roll around, I love to have a refreshing drink by my side. Even better if the ingredients are fresh! One of my absolute favorite drinks for these sun-drenched afternoons is a homemade mint lemonade recipe—a great way to blend the tartness of fresh lemon juice with the bright, cooling flavor of fresh mint leaves. This simple recipe uses a mint syrup made from a sugar syrup base, resulting in a sweet yet tangy lemonade that’s perfect for sharing at special occasions or enjoying in individual glasses on the porch.

If you have a lemon tree in your yard, I’m jealous! This is a wonderful recipe to make use of your harvest. But even if you’re relying on store-bought lemons or bottled lemon juice, this drink is delicious.

Mint grows and spreads fast, so it’s easy to start a pot of mint in the spring and have a lush continual harvest in just a couple months.

Why You’ll Love This Mint Lemonade

This lemonade is simple, but it’s brimming with the fresh mint flavor that mint lovers crave. The mint syrup gives it a cooling effect, and you’ll love how it perfectly complements the zesty lemon notes. Plus, it’s easy to make, requiring only a few steps, a medium saucepan, a strainer, and some patience while the mint leaves steep.

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need for this homemade lemonade recipe:

  • 1 cup packed fresh mint leaves
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice (about 8–10 whole lemons)
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 cup regular sugar (or caster sugar)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Mint Syrup

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar and 2 cups water. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon until the sugar is completely dissolved and you have a clear sugar syrup. Add the fresh mint leaves and continue to boil for 1–2 minutes, allowing the syrup to pick up that lovely fresh mint flavor.

Remove the saucepan from the heat, cover it, and let it steep at room temperature for at least 30 minutes—or even longer if you want a stronger minty taste. This is your mint syrup base.

Step 2: Prepare the Lemon Juice Mixture

While your mint syrup is steeping, squeeze 1 1/2 cups lemon juice into a large pitcher. You can also substitute lime juice or even add a splash of both for a unique twist. If you’d like to save time, bottled lemon juice works in a pinch.

Add 4 cups cold water to the pitcher and give it a quick stir to blend the lemon flavor with the water.

Step 3: Combine and Serve

Using a fine mesh strainer, pour the mint syrup through the strainer into the lemon juice mixture, discarding the mint leaves. Stir well to incorporate the syrup. Taste and adjust—add a bit more water or sugar if you’d like a lighter or sweeter drink.

Chill your lemonade in the refrigerator for at least an hour, then serve over ice cubes. Garnish each glass with a sprig of mint or a thin slice of lemon peel for an extra pop of color.

Tips and Variations

  • Sparkling water can replace regular water for a bubbly version. Make the mint syrup with regular water as described above, then replace the remaining 4 cups of water with sparkling water.
  • For a fun twist, add a splash of watermelon juice for watermelon mint lemonade.
  • If you find the lemonade too tart, reduce the amount of lemon juice or add a touch more sugar.
  • Store any leftover lemonade in a covered container in the fridge for up to a few days.

Make It Your Own

One of the best parts of this recipe is how customizable it is. Experiment with different herbs from your herb garden—basil, thyme, or lavender would all make unique additions. For a slightly different tartness, try swapping out some of the lemon juice for lime juice.

I hope this great recipe inspires you to try your hand at making a refreshing minty lemonade right at home. With just a few simple ingredients—a bit of hot water, sugar, lemon juice, and fresh mint leaves—you’ll have the best flavor of summer in your glass.

Print this recipe card, tuck it away, and pull it out whenever the temperature rises. It’s a delightful summer drink.

Happy sipping! 🍋🌿
